Congleton Town vs Bacup Borough: Macron Cup final Preview
The 68th and final game of a monstrous season for Congleton Town is finally upon us as The Bears prepare to face Bacup Borough in this year’s Macron Cup final.
Richard Duffy’s men will look to sign off for the summer with a cup double after defeating National League side Altrincham in the Cheshire Senior Cup final, against all odds, on penalties.
Lewis Short, Pete Williams, Ryan Read and Darren Chadwick all made no mistake from twelve yards to send the travelling Bears faithful into scenes of jubilation ten days ago.
Two trophies would be the minimum this side deserves after what they’ve achieved, the games they’ve played, the memories they’ve provided and the cup runs they have been on.
Both sides have one trophy under their belt as they arrive at Victory Park today, with Bacup Borough lifting the Edward Case Cup last Monday, ironically at the Cleric Stadium.
The motivation couldn’t be higher for either team, setting up what could be a thrilling affair.
Our Macron Journey so far
Ellesmere Rangers 1-2 Congleton Town
One of three incredible cup runs this season for Congleton began with a closely fought encounter at Ellesmere Rangers where strikes from Dan Needham and George Sankey was enough to edge The Bears into the second round.
Brocton 1-2 Congleton Town
Congleton needed another 2-1 to defeat Brocton next, but this time it was the defenders that made the difference with Richard Duffy and Darren Chadwick’ goals securing The Bears’ ticket to the third round.
Lower Breck 0-1 Congleton Town
Another away trip loomed for Congleton who faced Merseyside outfit and fellow NWCFL Premier Division side Lower Breck in the third round. A late header from Tom Hampton kept The Bears’ Macron Cup journey going for another round.
Congleton Town 1-0 Northwich Victoria
Another close encounter played out in the quarter-final as Northwich Victoria travelled to the Cleric Stadium. Ethan Hartshorn’s 84th minute winner set up Congleton’s trip to Kendal Town.
Kendal Town 0-3 Congleton Town
The Bears cruised into the final after a dominant display away at Kendal Town a month ago. Goals from Hartshorn, Tom Pope and a Lewis Short penalty left Richard Duffy’s men in touching distance of the Macron Cup.
From sending AFC Fylde to a replay, to being 90 minutes away from Wembley and to overcome national league opposition at their own ground in a cup final. Let’s get behind these lads, like we have all season. One more push, for one more trophy.
Come on you Bears!
